Horticulture department to plant fruit-bearing trees

9/6/14 4:36 PM

BHUBANESWAR: The horticulture department will plant fruit-bearing plants on 20,000 ha under MGNREGS in 2014-15, generating 2.02 crore mandays, official sources said.
Saplings of mango, coconut, cashewnut and banana will be distributed among farmers, who have MGNREGS job cards. The land will belong to farmers. "For the plantation work, farmers will be paid Rs 164 a day," said horticulture director Sanjeev Chaddha at a meeting here recently.
He said as it would take three years for the trees to bear fruits, farmers would get support to grow other crops. "To boost their livelihood, we will help farmers cultivate vegetables in vacant spaces," said the director.
